move to the new house

22.4.2012 BUILDING NEWS

We reached the point of no return today when we moved our fridge down to the new house. This was quite an undertaking because we had to take out the donga door and frame to get it out! Luckily Stevo was here to help or we would still be struggling. Edd and I started work at 5am when a storm struck. The day before we had lit the wood stove but the pump did not work. The whole system boiled so that water spewed down the chimney.

Luckily we had a man over who was setting up the other wood fire and he seemed to understand how the system was wrong. Al was over too so they took the cover off the chimney to look at how the tank was set up. They put the roof cover back on but did not seal it so when a thunderstorm hit Edd and I had to leap out of bed and rush up the bank to the roof with plastic tarps to cover everything up. It was difficult because there was a huge hole dug at the side of the roof to put in the gas cylinder. This had not been done because when the hole was dug the telephone cable was cut and this had to be mended first. We were pretty worried about falling down the hole as it was very dark and slippery but I shone my car headlights onto the roof and then dragged polystyrene sheets over the hole, which we covered in tarps. This made it more visible and also stopped it filling with rain. By the time we had done all we needed to do it was nearly 6am and it was not worth going back to bed.

We also had a large Permaculture tour group coming so over sleeping would have been a disaster. When everyone had left Stevo, Edd and I worked on the gas cylinder hole. We put in the huge cardboard tube and back filled it with earth. It is now covered up again but the hole is much smaller and harder to accidently slip into. May be we can now get the cylinder and its’ case in place and connect up the gas stove. At the moment we have two stoves, neither of which can be used so Edd has gone off to get Chinese take away. I am worried because with so much going wrong and now the change in the weather I am behind the planned schedule again! OTHER NEWS Bo, Simon and all the kids came over for breakfast in the new house on Saturday morning. It is so good that Simon is now feeling fit enough to be social again. It was a perfect sunny day so I hid the left over Easter eggs around the garden and the kids had a belated Easter egg chase.
The animals have been good too. India and her friend took the horses out on the road and they behaved very well. It makes me so happy to see India riding and enjoying herself. Then today all the young kids I have been training came up and jumped up onto the bale to get their food like professionals even with the dairy chock a block full of permaculture students. I feel pretty proud of them too.
